SUMMARY:Navigating the Trilemma: Security, Power, and Performance Trade-of
 fs in Bluetooth Low Energy
DESCRIPTION:Ning Miao, Chongzhou Fang, Ruijie Fang, Ruoyu Zhang, and Setar
eh Rafatirad (University of California, Davis); Hossein Sayadi (California
State University, Long Beach); and Houman Homayoun (University of Califor
nia, Davis)\n\nBluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology plays a crucial role
in IoT and wearable devices due to its energy-efficient design. This paper
explores the intricate interplay between BLE's security configurations, p
ower consumption, and performance. Through comprehensive experiments, we a
nalyze the cost of security on power efficiency and transmission speed, re
vealing trade-offs essential for BLE protocol design. The experimental res
ults indicate that security settings can impact both energy consumption an
d performance. Moreover, our findings reveal that more performant protocol
configurations can paradoxically lead to reduced energy consumption. This
highlights the paramount importance of the security-power-performance tra
de-off in BLE protocol design.\n\nTracks: DES5: Emerging Device and Interc
